SEA ISLE CITY – Each March, Mayor Leonard Desiderio and his family host Sea Isle City’s annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade along Landis Avenue followed by a festive “Irish Celebration” at KIX-McNutley’s Bar on 63rd Street. 2013 will mark the 23nd year for the annual Irish-march, which is scheduled to take place on Saint Patrick’s Day, Sat., March 16, beginning at 3:30 p.m. A variety of participants are expected to once again make this year’s parade and celebration very special.

The parade will include live music, including the members of the Atlantic City Fire Department Sandpiper Pipe Band, who are new-comers to the annual event. Beauty queens, scout troops, antique vehicles, fire engines, ambulances and floats will also be seen in the parade, as will a variety of mascots, including McGruff the Crime Dog and Eddie the Eagle from the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department. Businesses, members of local civic groups, the VFW Post 1963 Color Guard and many other participants will also add to the day’s enjoyment – along with countless spectators lining Landis Avenue, wearing green apparel and eye-catching Irish accessories.

Sea Isle’s 2013 Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will begin at 93rd Street in Townsend Inlet and continue along Landis Avenue to 63rd Street, where it will culminate at the 2013 Irish Celebration. The celebration, which will be open to the public immediately after the parade, will feature additional Irish music, Irish food and plenty “wearin’ of the green.” Representatives from Sea Isle’s Beach Tag Office will also be present at the celebration to sell commemorative Saint Patrick’s Day Beach Tags, which will serve as seasonal passes on all of Sea Isle’s beaches during the 2013 summer season.

beaches situated north of 20th Street. Any beach area adjacent to rock

jetties not designated as a surfing or kayaking beach.

Unprotected Beaches

Beaches north of 20th Street and south of 93rd Street have no

designations. These beaches do not have lifeguards present and use is

at one’s own risk. Swimming is permitted on bathing beaches

Fees and Charges:

No fee shall be charged to or collected from any person under the age of twelve.

Twenty ($20.00) dollars per person per season provided that application is made to the proper authorities on or before the cut-off date of May 15 of each year.

Twenty five ($25.00) dollars per person per season in the event that application is made to the proper authorities subsequent to the cut-off date of May 15^th of each year and for the remainder of the bathing season.

Ten ($10.00) dollars per person per week for any week or fractional part thereof of the bathing season. Weekly badges shall be valid from Saturday at 10:00 a.m. to the following Saturday (eight {8} days later) at 5:00 p.m.

Five ($5.00) dollars per day for a daily bathing privilege subsequent to the City observed day for Memorial Day.

The Sea Isle City ACME Market, located at 63rd Street and Landis Avenue, is currently undergoing renovations; however the ACME will be open for business during Polar Bear Plunge Weekend.  Basic / staple items will be available at the ACME in limited quantities from Thursday to Sunday, February 14 to 17, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. each day. 

The Townsend Inlet Bridge (connecting Sea Isle City and Avalon) is closed for renovations and will not be open during Polar Bear Plunge Weekend.

JFK Boulevard is currently under construction between Landis Avenue and the causeway bridge. Drivers are advised to be aware of new traffic patterns and a reduced speed limit of 25 mph along JFK. 

Landis and Central Avenues are also currently under construction; however both Landis and Central will be open during Polar Bear Plunge Weekend with no detours in place.

A Jitney Service will be available to shuttle festival-goers to and from events during Polar Bear Plunge Weekend. Jitneys will run along Landis Avenue (between JFK Boulevard and 94th Street) on Friday (5:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.), Saturday (10:00 a.m. until 3:00 a.m.) and Sunday (10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The fee to ride the jitney one-way is $2.00 per person prior to 11:00 p.m. and $4.00 per person between 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.  The main downtown Jitney drop-off / pick-up location is the corner of Landis and West Jersey Avenues (next to Veterans Park).

A Medical Tent will be positioned behind the Excursion Park Band Shell during the plunge on Saturday, manned by care-givers from Cape Regional Medical Center.

Reminder: The Sea Isle City Police Department has moved to the former Public School at 4501 Park Road (Fish Alley). The Police Department can be accessed via the 46th Street side of the school building.

Please Plunge Safely!  It’s never a good idea to enter the ocean on an unprotected beach. Please plunge only at JFK Boulevard, where members of Sea Isle City’s Beach Patrol and other water rescue teams will be positioned.

Sea Isle City Vacation Rental Market 2013 Update

Here we are in January 20, 2013 and The Landis Co. is gearing up and retooling for a very exciting new year in Sea Isle City. So why do we say that? First of all the city is making great strides in infastructure with construction all around town. One of the major projects is the JFK Boulavard area improvement project. More about this will be focused in a future blog post or read some of the previous posts.

Two things have us feeling good about this years rental season. These are a supply and demand issue.

One is that we are finding many of our tenants are either booking the same property in advance or hurrying to pick a different one before the big rush that comes in February.

The second is the stablizing in the real estate market in  Sea Isle City. Last year we saw a 50% increase in sale with a total of 228 units sold. Many of these properties are now off the rental market which has lowered the total number of rental properties. We will be monitoring the rental permits and get that information out later in the year. With even half of the properties no longer on the market that is a lose of 1140 weeks of inventory. Additionally many agents are also hearing that many owners seem to be blocking out more owner weeks for some reason as well making this year more problematic for tenants that like to wait until the summer for picking a rental property.

Beach Fee Towns Decry Proposal for Free Access

SEA ISLE CITY – Mayors and officials representing six Cape May County municipalities that charge fees to access their beaches converged in the gymnasium of the former Sea Isle City Elementary School to let their collective voice be heard. They do not support proposed legislation that would require beach towns, accepting federal or state funds for beach replenishment, to provide free beach access.

“As you know, Cape May County (economy) is generated by tourism. Tourism is our number one industry,” said Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio. According to him, tourism in the county produces $5.1 billion annually.

“The beach is our treasure, the beach is our lifeline,” Desiderio said. “It’s something all of our communities rely on.”

Municipalities throughout the county have taken umbrage with bipartisan legislation proposed by Democratic State Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-3rd) and Republican Sen. Michael Doherty (D-23rd).

According to Desiderio, the proposed legislation is “totally ridiculous.” He compared the logic of taking away government funding to municipalities that charge beach fees to taking away tolls from roads that receive state and local funds.

“I think all of us up here are in agreement that if there was legislation if you accepted federal or state funding for highways or roads the tolls would be lifted, you would see us in a different fashion.”

With shore towns still in cleanup and reconstruction mode from the aftereffects of Hurricane Sandy, local leaders questioned the timing of the proposed legislation.

“We went through a horrific storm. Many of our communities have businesses that are still out and homeowners who are still displaced. To put this type of legislation in now, while we are going to cleanup or rebuilding, is not right. It’s not right at any time, but especially now,” said Desiderio.
